This year, International Women’s Day was on March 8 and was a time to reflect on the extraordinary contributions of women throughout the world and to declare: Women’s rights are human rights!
At a beautiful event hosted by Fullerton College, the California Community Colleges Women’s Caucus (CCCWC) presented a luncheon, speakers, and panel discussions from luminaries in higher education and business. Keynote speaker Betty Porto of Porto’s Bakery & Cafe shared heartfelt stories about her family’s immigration from Cuba while highlighting the entrepreneurial courage and tenacity of her mother. Dr. Letitia Clark, former Mayor of Tustin and Chief Communication Officer for South Orange County Community College District gave a stirring speech about her work as a grassroots advocate in which she said:
“There were moments when doors seemed closed, when rooms didn’t always feel built for people who looked like me, and when the path forward felt uncertain. But I’ve learned that sometimes what feels like a setback is actually preparation. If we remain grounded in purpose, service, and faith, the opportunities meant for us will come—often greater than we imagined.”

Attendees got a behind the scenes peek into the dissertation research of several community college leaders in the thoughtful panel, “From Surviving to Thriving: Exploring Latina Leadership in Community Colleges.” And legal experts partnered with students to illuminate “Behind the Shadow: A Look at Today’s Immigration Issues.” The day served as a powerful reminder that when women support, mentor, and lift one another, our communities grow stronger.
